Child and Family Poverty Report
Card: New Brunswick 2008. Nearly
twenty three thousand New Brunswick children
- one in six - live in poverty, according
to the 2008 Report Card on Child and Family

Fifth Annual Holiday Sharing Guide.
The Human Development Council has released
the 2008 Holiday Sharing Guide for St. John,
Kings, and Charlotte counties. The guide
is a list of community giving, and community
assistance programs; it is a resource that
assists those who want to give help, and
those who would like to receive help. Included
in the guide are: various holiday food,
toy or gift programs; community dinners;
a list of food and clothing banks; free
family events; fund-raising events, and
locations to offer volunteer assistance.

Saint John Celebrates National
Housing Day. The Greater Saint
John Homelessness Steering Committee and
community partners are celebrating National
Housing Day (November 22nd) during the week
of November 17th. Check out the schedule
of events and join us to learn more
about Housing and Homelessness in your community.

VitalSigns 2008. Greater
Saint John’s 2008 VitalSigns was prepared
by the Human Development Council for the
Greater Saint John Community Foundation.
It is an annual community check up which
measures the vitality of our region, identifies
significant trends, and assigns grades in
at least 10 areas critical to quality of

Perspectives on Homelessness –
September 2008. The Greater Saint
John Homelessness Steering Committee has
released the first edition of their homelessness
newsletter, Perspectives on Homelessness.

A Portrait of Homelessness in
Greater Saint John examines the
services in the community to assist homeless
people and the gaps which remain. The report
calls for greater government action from
all levels and more coordination among services
providers. It cites the need for better
data collection and calls on individuals
to be better informed on the issue, including
what factors keep people homeless. Download

The Faces and Voices of Homelessness video.
Surviving the Streets - Where to
go when you need help. Updated
for 2008. This guide was developed for at-risk
youth, aged 13-25 in the St. John and Kings
County areas of New Brunswick. It lists
essential services, with phone numbers,
that assist youth who are living in poverty,
at risk of dropping out of school, may practise
harmful behaviors, or are otherwise marginalized.

and caregivers, and professionals working

Children’s Health Task Force.
Prepared by the Human Development
Council and presented to the Legislature’s
Select Committee on Wellness, this report
recommends methods to improve the fitness,
nutrition and academic achievement of children
between the ages of 5 and 12 living in poverty
in greater Saint John. Download

Makin' it Work! This brochure
was developed with the assistance of the
Human Development Council and members of
Vibrant Communities. It invites people to
consider education, training and employment
services that can assist them in their next

Youth Homelessness in Saint John.
This report presents the findings of a count
of homeless youth 16 to 24 years of age
in the city of Saint John during the month
of February 2007. It also highlights best
practices in Fredericton and Moncton for
sheltering their city's homeless youth.
The count identified 45 homeless youth (23
females and 22 males), who sought shelter
in a variety of places including: couch
surfing, emergency shelters, transitional
housing, on the streets, and temporarily
in a hotel. For further details download

Life: The Municipal Youth Cabinet's Role
in Inclusion. This paper offers
an examination of the Saint John Youth Cabinet's
establishment, with a focus on youth (dis)engagement
and its effect on social inclusion. Download

Housing is a key influence in the overall
well-being of Saint John residents. This
booklet can help housing proponents identify
programs that will help them address our
community's affordable housing needs. A

Responding to the Voices of Poverty
- Six Years Later. Produced by
the Urban Core Support Network, this report
highlights personal, social and systemic
barriers that impact women and often prevent
them from escaping poverty. It paints an
accurate yet disturbing picture of many
low income women living in Saint John in
2004.

Support Network (UCSN) was formed in Saint
John in 1994. It is a partnership of individuals,
and organizations working to reduce poverty
in our community. UCSN seeks systemic changehange
through advocacy, education, inclusiveness,
creating opportunities, social action and
building community capacity. The Human Development
Council is pleased to co-chair UCSN.
