The South End is centrally located with many services in
close proximity. Where else can you find a rooming house
next door to a renovated historic building selling for $700,000?
This area is at the heart of a key question: how do we revitalize
a neighbourhood by encouraging mixed income development
without displacing the current residents?
“I love my community, there is some much potential
here. The South End is a diverse neighbourhood, with residents
having a variety of mixed income levels. We do have concerns
such as, affordable housing, there is a high amount of
derelict and abandoned buildings; and an apparent need
for better street lighting just to name a few.”
~ Jennifer Edison
The South End is also home to at least three resident groups.
The South End Area Community Action Team (SEACAT), a group
of low-income residents and partners with the objective
to improve conditions in the deep South End. Police Unite
Lower South End (PULSE), is a group of residents and partner
organization initiated by the Saint John Police Force focussed
on crime prevention and maintaining a community building
with community police officer on Wentworth Street. The resident
group with the longest history is the South Central Citizen’s
Council.
